I’ve been re-reading The Healing Power of Sound (Recovery from Life-Threatening Illness Using Sound, Voice, and Music) by Mitchell L. Gaynor, M.D. It reminds me of just how amazing singing bowls truly are.
Since 1991, Dr. Gaynor (a NYC Oncologist) has achieved remarkable results by integrating the use of singing bowls in his work with critically ill patients.
I was fortunate enough to be invited to attend one of his weekly meditation groups for his patients in NYC. He led a guided meditation with a quartz singing bowl while toning. It was an amazing experience.
What he writes of his first encounter with bowls would be something I’d write too: It goes: “I could feel the vibration physically resonating through my body, touching my core in such a way that I felt in harmony with the universe. I did not, at that moment, make a conscious decision to further explore the singing bowls.
It was almost as if I didn’t have a choice in the matter, because I
immediately intuited that playing the bowls would change my life, and the
lives of many (of my patients)”
And that’s pretty much how I feel about them. I’ve been playing these bowls, really playing, since 2008. I’ve been a lot of places and I’ve heard a lot of comments. So let me share with you, in these next few posts, some of what I’ve witnessed in these almost seven years of playing.
I love my bowls. It’s like I have found my Joy by playing them and sharing them. I do caution that one ‘side-effect’ of a bowl session is Relaxation … and I mean total, to the core … to every cell in your body … type of relaxation … an internal sonic massage of sorts.
And the following quote from The Answer will give you a clue as to why …
“Everything is energy — a rock, a planet, a glass of water, your hand – everything you can touch, taste, or smell – it’s made of molecules, which are made of atoms, which are made of protons, electrons and neutrons – which are made of nothing but vibrating packets of energy.”
… and that’s where the vibrations from the tones of my bowls go … into that vibrating packet of energy that is within every cell of your Being. Every atom, molecule, cell, and organ in our bodies has its own natural, healthy frequency/vibration. Each one of us emits a vibration, a sound, which is a signature of our health and well being. And just as a musical instrument can go out of tune … so can our bodies.
Sound and vibration can be used to re-tune us back towards health … towards a balanced frequency of body, mind, and spirit.
We each have a song to sing. What kind of sound do you think you make?
